The Irish Times reports the move is aimed at reducing the evasion rate, which is currently around 15 per cent.
RTE estimates it loses out on 50 million euro a year due to non-payment of the fee. Former Communications Minister Pat Rabbitte believes Revenue will resist the proposal:"I have to say that I will be surprised if the revenue commissioners agreed to do so. The revenue commissioners collect taxes. They do not collect utility charges and it would be a first if they were to do it."
