A West Cork TD has hit out at the government's handling of the Dursey Island and Castletownbear communities.

The Dursey Island Cable Car service which connects the island with the mainland, closed last April for major upgrades.

It had been due to reopen this month.

However, delays to the 1.2 million euro project - mean the cable car might not be back in use before next year.

Recent bad weather left the temporary ferry service unable to access the island - with locals being forced to make their own way across the hasardous stretch of water.

Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy Michael Collins says the government needs to do much more to support islanders and those reliant on the cable car:

"You know, the Dursey Island Cable Car issue has been a huge issue for the last 6-8 months, but poorly handled by the government. I'm very critical about the handling of it, and not sitting around the table with the local politician, not sitting around with people that may be able to create solutions, but they've been left there stranded in the last number of weeks, without a ferry services".
