The charity has described the high volume as "unusual" at this time of the year but say the level of calls they are handling since early July has increased 15% on the same period last year.

In June RedFM News highlighted a warning issued by St Vincent de Paul that they would not be able to deal with increased demand for help unless the Government provided them with special funding.

The call came as the moratorium on electricity disconnections which was introduced to help households struggling to pay their bills during the pandemic came to an end.

At that time they also expressed their fears that the winding down of Covid supports over the next few months would see many families face hardship, especially around ‘back to school’.

Today St Vincent de Paul in Cork says families are seeking help paying utility bills along with back to school costs in the face of the reduction of the pandemic unemployment payment from mid-September.

The charity says the demand for hampers - which are being issued at the rate of 40 a week on average - is usually only seen in the run up to Christmas.

Listeners who are facing financial difficulties are being urged by the charity not to seek help in the short term from moneylenders but rather contact their local credit union, MABS or the charity for help.
