A Cork woman, who was the victim of stalking, will see legislation to create stalking an offence in Irish law debated in the Seanad today.

Youghal woman Una Ring teamed up with Eve McDowell from Galway after they were both subjected to horrific stalking campaigns by men they barely knew.

Their decision to speak out about their experiences, in which they both came close to losing their lives, has resulted in the drafting of legislation which will be debated in the Seanad today.

Stalking is not an offence under Irish Law, and in April Una Ring and Eve McDowell launched this campaign for the introduction of the stand-alone offence with longer sentences for the crime than those currently available to prosecutors.

Una has travelled to Leinster House today for the debate and speaking to RedFM News she says she's determined to see the new law introduced.

"Walk a mile in my shoes. If somebody in my position went through this I'm sure they'd have no hesitation getting the legislation passed because they'd have been through it.

"It's a very frightening situation to be in and the law needs to be there - it's horrendous in 2021 to have no law against stalking whatsoever in the country."
