Visit Cork, in collaboration with Cork County Council and Cork City Council, has announced the "Waste Not, Want Not" conference to combat food waste within the tourism sector. The initiative is a response to over 25% of the world's food production being wasted.

They say the conference aims to gather stakeholders from the tourism and hospitality industry and is funded by the Regional Waste Management Planning Offices' "Green Hubs" Fund.

The half-day event on Wednesday, 31st January will be held in the Education, Conservation and Research Centre in Fota Wildlife Park and will detail Visit Cork's plans for the sector in 2024.

Expert speakers will share practical solutions for waste management.

Head of Visit Cork, Seamus Heaney, says Ireland has significant food waste, estimated at 753,000 tonnes in 2021, with hotels generating the highest levels.

The "Waste Not, Want Not" conference is free but requires advance online registration due to limited spaces. Businesses can also opt to donate to Fota Wildlife Park conservation and education activities during registration. For registration and more information, visit clr.ie/135388.

They are also encouraging businesses to visit Mywaste.ie for resources on waste management changes and national obligations.
