72 pub owners closed their doors across the county between 2019 and 2023 according to new figures from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland.
The group is calling on the Government for a reduction in the excise duty on alcohol to help reduce the number of closures.
Speaking to RedFM News, Michael Farrell of Farrell’s Bar Summerfield predicts the situation will get worse over the next 5 years as staff wages increase:
"I’m not surprised, it's what we know already. The pub industry is under severe pressure at the moment and unfortunately the Government are doing everything to exacerbate the problem with the new legislation they’re proposing, it's going to have dire consequences on the trade and it will only get worse in the next four or five years, unfortunately."
